Why Barasat's Kali Puja is special

Barasat, the headquarters town of North 24 Parganas, turns Kali Puja into a citywide festival. It is often called Bengal's second biggest festival after Kolkata's Durga Puja: clubs build big theme pandals — replicas of palaces, temples and famous buildings — with towering idols of Ma Kali, and crowds pandal-hop late into the night.

The lighting is a show of its own. Bengal's light artists, above all from Chandannagar — famous for its Jagaddhatri Puja illuminations — have moved from bulbs to LED, pixel lights and animated panels, and their arches and light pictures line the roads.

Visiting in person: tips

  • Go by train: Barasat Junction is on the Sealdah–Bangaon and Sealdah–Hasnabad lines.
  • Expect heavy crowds on the puja night and the nights after; weekday evenings are calmer.
  • Roads are often closed or diverted to traffic near the big pandals — plan to walk.
  • Keep phones and wallets secure, carry water, and agree on a meeting point with your group.

Questions

When is Kali Puja in 2026?

Kali Puja 2026 falls on Sunday, 8 November 2026, on Kartik Amavasya — the same night as Diwali. The main puja is performed at night, around midnight (the Nishita period, roughly 11:40 pm to 12:35 am going into 9 November in West Bengal). Exact muhurat times vary slightly between panchangs, so check a local panjika.

Why is Barasat's Kali Puja famous?

Barasat, in North 24 Parganas, is often described as having Bengal's second biggest festival after Kolkata's Durga Puja. Neighbourhood clubs build large theme pandals — palaces, temples, famous buildings from around the world — with towering Kali idols and elaborate lighting, and visitors come from across the state.

How do I reach Barasat for Kali Puja?

Barasat Junction is on the Sealdah–Bangaon and Sealdah–Hasnabad suburban lines, about 25 km north-east of Kolkata. During the puja nights roads are crowded and traffic is diverted, so trains and walking between pandals are usually easiest.

Can I see Barasat Kali Puja online?

Yes. Pujaverse is a free 3D walk through a Barasat Kali Puja night in your browser: theme pandals, Kali darshan, Chandannagar lights, the mela and fair rides, on a phone, computer or Meta Quest VR. It is a fictional composite inspired by the festival, not a live stream of any real pandal.

Is Pujaverse free? Do I need an app?

It is free and runs in the web browser — no app needed. On a phone you can add it to your Home Screen to open it like an app.
